During the first week, we read excerpts from the book Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out: Kids Living and Learning with New Media (2010). Chapter 1 of the text discusses how today's youth engage with media, who they engage with while using new media, and the meaning behind their different activities and experiences. I found creating the web below helpful in understanding the three genres of participation highlighted. Inline with the sociocultural perspective, these genres look at the context in which learning and literacy take place.
